Instead of rehashing old lists such as the strongest characters in the Comics Universe, here is a new list of the most powerful Magic users. Not all Superheroes or villains can be muscle-bound freaks of nature.
The fact of the matter is there are as many characters with arcane and mystical abilities in the Marvel Universe as there are muscular heroes who succeed through feats of physical strength. Their abilities come from many different Mythos and disciplines. For examples, the Silver Surfer is given his powers by serving “The Power Cosmic”, Thanos’ abilities are enhanced by using new technologies. A plethora of other characters have their powers through magical, arcane means.
It isn’t an easy task to compare what magic is better or stronger than the other. There isn’t a scale to explain the different levels between levitation or fire starting, but we will give our best attempt to rank and separate them here. For the most part we will try to avoid the all powerful Super Deities such as Thor and Odin, and instead will focus on those who had to study and develop their arcane abilities, so don’t expect to see the likes of Cyttorak, Shuma Gorath or the Vishanti on this list.
Clea (Strange Tales 126, November 1964) is the offspring of another powerful sorceress Umar, with the powerful Dormammu as her uncle. She is also the wife, lover, pupil and oft times nemesis of Doctor Strange. Through these relations she became a powerful wielder of magic in her own right. It is through her relationship with Doctor Strange where she gained her most arcane skills of teleportation, telekinesis. For the most part she has powerful Mind controlling skills.
Clea adorns the “Flames of Regency” as a powerful display of her control over the dark dimensions. She also can invoke such powerful entities as “The Krakken” or “The Seraphim”, both to help protect herself and to show her dominion.
#9. Brother Voodoo.
Jerico Drumm, also known as Brother Voodoo, (Original Strange Tales 169 September 1973) hails from Haiti. He travelled to the USA working as a Psychologist. Later he returned home to find his brother Daniel dying from a powerful curse. This led him to tutor under Daniel’s mentor, one Papa Jambo, and thus became a powerful Voodoo Shaman himself.
He learned many various Voodoo disciplines including control over the elements, hypnotism, self concealment, and the summoning of spirits. Among his more notable feats of magic is his ability to become the Sorcerer Supreme (Hence taking the name Doctor Voodoo). He fought one month to try to kill every magic being in the world. He gained the skill to control every living thing on Earth, and he uses his magic to overcome Doctor Doom’s* Scientific Technology. He also has summoned the spirit of his brother Daniel which gave him the ability to devastate Zombies with his bare hands.
Doctor Doom is also on this list, being one of the few who has mastery over both the scientific world, and arcane skills. Then again, what is magic except science undiscovered?
#8 Modred the Mystic
Modred the Mystic (Original Marvel Chillers 1 October 1975) has been portrayed as both anti-hero and a super-villain. He is a great and mighty sorcerer. His powers came from learning spells from the mystical Talisman known as the Darkhold, and then became even more powerful by exchanging his soul for more control over the Tome’s arcane abilities.
Through his dedication to this magic tome, he has vast magical skills. Some seem mundane to him, such as levitation, manipulating the basic elements of the world, making magical barriers, and using magical bursts for offensive measures. He also uses stronger magic like the ability to cast “Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. He can call up entire armies of undead with a casual arcane blast. He has also been known to control the Phoenix from another dimension.
(original Strange Tales 150 November 1966) Umar is the sister of Dormammu and the mother of Clea (Number 10 of this list). She was originally an energy spirit known as a Faltine but was trapped in a Human body. Even with this limitation she was a very dangerous, powerful, and evil sorceress.
She retained the ability to conjure spirits at will, can change size, and can alter time and space. She also has limited abilities to cast illusions and has minor mind control skills. Though limited compared to her brother she still has the strength to control and summon Cyttorak or Bishru. She also can form tongue shaped energy constructs which can hold in place either the Hulk or Red She-Hulk. Although she is slight and limber in form, she behaves frivolously with the Hulk, leaving him exhausted while showing no sign of strain from the effort.
Loki (Original Journey into Mystery 85 October 1962) Loki has regained popularity from his cinematic appearance in the Marvel Universe of late. Surprisingly he was stronger in earlier comic form.
Loki is the discarded son of the Frost Giant Laufey. He was adopted and raised among the sons of the Asgardian All-Father, Odin. From Norse legend, he is the original magician, the trickster. He has superhuman strength and endurance, but also has vast arcane skills. His mastery over illusions, shape shifting, and teleportation even through dimensions come almost at will. He can also shoot out energy blasts.
He has the ability to use mind control even on his half brother Thor, the ability to switch bodies with Thor which enables him to heft Mjolnir (Thor’s Hammer). He can double the strengths of others around him, and has been able to transmute Kang the Conqueror and Mantis into energy before absorbing them into himself.
#5 Baron Mordo
Baron Karl Amadeus Mordo (Original Strange Tales 111, August 1963) is one of the greatest Villains apposing Doctor Strange. He first gained interest in magic from his grandfather. His mentor was “The Ancient One” who trained him even knowing that the powers would corrupt the Baron. Later when Doctor Stephen Strange began to tutor under “The Ancient One” Mordo became jealous and sank into villainy.
His broad display of gifts include teleportation, Time and Energy Manipulation, Elemental Control, and Astral Projection. His versatile powers allowed him to steal powers from Doctor Strange and banish him to another world. For a time he held his own against his nemesis and the aforementioned avatars. He could move between worlds and dimensions using mirrors. His astral projection allowed him to fight in one dimension while his body remained safe in another and allowed him to leech energy from those even as powerful as M.
#4. Scarlet Witch
Wanda Maximoff (Original The X-Men 4, March 1964) is a mutant who’s inherent mutation is the ability to manipulate chaos magic to various affects. Originally rumoured to be the daughter of Magneto (Though this has been disproven and disputed) and the sister of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch is considered among the most powerful Mutants of the Marvel Universe.
Her Hexes give her the ability to change probabilities and alter reality. She can project a force field, astral projection, cast illusions, and levitate and fly.
Her most fearsome feats include defeating Ultron with one blast, altering and changing Thor’s lightning, and beating back the Phoenix Five. Alongside Hope Summers she defeated the Dark Phoenix. She managed to deceive and out move her super speedy brother Pietro, and once wiped out most of Mutantdom by simply saying “No more mutants.” (Taking the number of Mutants from the millions to mere hundreds)
No list of magical beings is complete without Merlin, or Merlyn in his Marvel form (Original Young Allies 11 March 1944). There is little debate that he is the most famous wizard of all time. Marvel portrays him more as a mixture of all the various characters who have used the name.
Practically Immortal, Merlin is one of the most powerful wizards of all time. He has uncanny precognitive skills. His powers seem more divine than human, including his shape-shifting skills, casting illusions, and projecting force fields.
His most noted in comic feats include expelling magic users as powerful as Morgan Le Fae, effortlessly shifting between forms, and making superheroes out of the likes of Captain Britain. He also expelled Iron Man and Doctor Doom to an alternate future.
#2 Doctor Strange.
Doctor Stephen Strange (Original Strange Tales 110, July 1963) is the most known and famous Marvel character on this list. He holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme. He sought out magic originally to try to fix his paralysed hands which had destroyed his surgical career.
He was tutored and mentored by “The Ancient One”, alongside Baron Mordo. The Ancient one gave him various arcane gifts, including cosmic awareness, astral projection, the ability to cast illusions and project force fields, and levitating.
Notably he can invoke great and powerful beings such as Cyttorak or Raggadorr either to protect himself or entrap his enemies. He matched powers against Adam Warlock while Adam wore the infinity bracelet. He also defeated the In-Betweener, and broke the restraints put in place by the Living Tribunal.
Dormammu (Original Strange Tales 126 November 1964) Is an energy being known as a Faltine. Unlike his sister Umar (#7) he has not been restrained in a human body and thus doesn’t share her limitations. He is the rightful ruler of the Dark Dimension; a great sorcerer with immense powers.
Dormammu generates an energy known as the Flames of the Faltine which can be used to bring entire worlds to an end. His powers are diverse, including travelling between dimensions, full on reality manipulation, and time manipulation. He is a powerful Necromancer and can also generate force fields. Dormammu has invoked Cyttorak to cast the Crimson Bands around an entire city. He single handedly defeated an army of heroes including Doctor Strange with a minor gesture. He flat out overpowered a host of the Phoenix Force, simply shrugged off the physical beating given him by the Defenders (The Hulk, Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider and Doctor Strange), and lastly sealed the cosmic entity known as Eternity.
